Barndominium Builders in Weatherford, Oklahoma
Weatherford sits on the I-40 corridor in Custer County, Oklahoma, and a good share of the land inside its city limits is open country rather than streets and blocks. That is where barndominiums make the most sense here: a detached home with a big shop bay, set back from a section-line road on a few acres. We build for owners across that range, from barndominium kits and shell packages to finished turnkey homes. Inside the city, the Inspection Department issues the building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits and inspects each phase, and it enforces a residential code edition the city names on its own website, so the plans are drawn to that edition from day one. The city's zoning ordinance also allows building permits on qualifying private roadways in its rural areas, which opens up acreage that does not front a dedicated street. Pole barn homes and steel-frame buildings both suit the wind-exposed western plains; the choice comes down to span, finish and budget. Send us the parcel and we will check its zoning district, road frontage and setbacks, and whether city water and sewer are within reach, before any drawing is priced.

City of Weatherford Inspection Department (License and Permit Office, City Hall)
Inside Weatherford's limits, the Inspection Department issues all building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits and inspects every phase of construction; it also registers electrical, mechanical and plumbing contractors and runs Planning and Zoning business. Land outside the city limits is in unincorporated Custer County, where the county says no building permit is required.

- Residential code adopted
- The city's Permits and Inspections page, read 26 September 2026, lists the International Residential Code, 2015 Edition as modified by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission, for one- and two-family dwellings, covering construction, plumbing, mechanical and electrical. That is Weatherford's own published adoption.
- A-1 General Agricultural District
- Weatherford's zoning ordinance (Chapter 18, Section 18-29) permits detached one-family dwellings in the A-1 General Agricultural District, along with accessory buildings such as barns, sheds and other farm buildings and private garages.
- Building on private roadways
- Because the city contains large rural areas not served by city water and sewer, Chapter 18 lets it issue building permits on private roadways that do not meet dedicated-street standards, if the easement is at least 50 feet wide, the property has at least two acres, and it lies more than a quarter mile from city sewer and water.
- Front setback in A-1
- In the A-1 district, buildings must set back from a state, federal or county highway or a section line road at least 25 feet from the right-of-way line or 75 feet from the center line of the right-of-way easement, whichever is greater (Section 18-29).
- Outside the city limits
- The Custer County Commissioners certify that the county has no zoning or fire safety and health regulations beyond state statutes and city ordinances, and that no building permits are required in unincorporated Custer County; a permit is still needed for work in county rights-of-way, and development permits apply in special flood hazard areas.

Building on land near Weatherford
Weatherford's acreage is a mix of agricultural-zoned tracts inside the city and open land beyond it in Custer County, and the two follow different rules. Inside the limits, confirm the zoning district on the city's interactive zoning map, measure the front setback from the section-line road, and ask whether city water and sewer are close enough to matter. Parcels on a private road need at least two acres and a 50-foot easement to qualify for a permit. Out in the county there is no building permit, but a new drive onto a county road and any work in a flood hazard area still need county approval.
